Welcome to the Carlsbad Cancer Connection website. We are here as a community to discover what is threatening our environment and our very lives, especially those of our children.
Cancer Lymphoma cases in Carlsbad
Due to numerous recent cases and deaths of local Carlsbad residents who have been diagnosed with different forms of lymphoma, we have been approved by USC Medical Center to have a Medical Tech Team do a case study in Carlsbad. Many of the illnesses have had a common thread of Heavy Metal Poisoning.
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has determined that benzene causes cancer in humans. Benzene is a highly toxic compound. It is a known carcinogen that can corrupt a person's body. It can be air born from a processing plant, it is found in pesticides, deodorants, cleansing products, foods, caffeinated drinks (even so called “healthy drinks”) etc. Long-term exposure to high levels of benzene in the air can cause leukemia, cancer of the blood-forming organs, can enter the bone marrow and can cause a decrease in red blood cells, leading to anemia. Benzene can also cause excessive bleeding and can adversely affect the immune system.
Some of the following illnesses have been directly linked to benzene poisoning:
In Carlsbad, our two primary concerns are 1.) the Encinas Power Plant and pending Desalination Plant, proposed to be built adjacent to the current power plant and 2.) the former, as well as existing, farmlands that once were the backdrop of most of Carlsbad. There are many homes and schools built on former farmland that may be contaminated with pesticides (which includes heavy metals and nitrates) due to the pressure backflow of the water sources.
This Case Study team will sample soil, water, possible air pollutants, etc. from various sites throughout our community in order to locate and pinpoint if there have been any exposures to environmental elements that may be contributing to the illnesses. This will include a look at local schools, beaches, sports playing fields, parks, lagoons and public water fountains, water sources, drainage from drain storms, etc.
In order for the Medical Tech Team to begin the process, we need to have your help in gathering as much information as possible. We need to count known cases and collect information from people involved or who have knowledge of current or past cases over a 10-15 year period.
We have the support of the Carlsbad School District and other county officials. We need to bring this situation to the awareness of our State officials and other cancer agencies as soon as possible.
We urgently need your participation. If you have a friend or loved one who has suffered from a CANCER related illness, or maybe you know of a family who has moved out of the area that had a case of lymphoma or other cancer related illness, we are here to work together to eliminate any further loss or suffering. We urge you to contact our website and fill in the questionnaire so we can best proceed in our efforts to prevent any further possible contaminants and Lymphoma cases.
If you are available for a phone or personal interview, please advise us.
Other Cancers in CarlsbadWe know that there are many other cancer illnesses in our community that also need to have the attention of a case study. The initial test findings by USC will also provide us with information that can assist us into detecting the possible causes linking more illnesses to these probable environmental contributors.
In 2000-2002 in Valley Center the same issues were raised due to an outbreak of childhood cancer related illnesses. Community members of Valley Center also believed that it was due to the former farmlands that had been transformed in communities with houses and schools. So, we need to commit to exploring the dangers in our community in order to have the Environmental Protection Agency and other health agencies come to the aid of Carlsbad as soon as possible.
There are various National websites to seek information; however, at this time Carlsbad does NOT show as a cancer cluster of any sort.
Neighboring Communities Questionnaire: Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar.
We know that Carlsbad is not alone in this battle and offer our neighboring communities to fill out a questionnaire as well, to tie in how many communities are affected by Cancer cases. We can also forward the information to your city officials if there are enough cases to be reported.
